Welfare Ground, Church Street, Armthorpe
Northern U19 Alliance - Pat Rice Trophy
Armthorpe (0) 1
Liversedge (1) 6
Admission £2
Programme 50p
The final result says it all. Armthorpe were dismantled tonight by a very good Liversedge side, who could quite easily have been more than six goals in front before the home side scored from the penalty spot late in the game.
The last time I'd watched the Welfare's Under 19 side play, at nearby Rossington, they looked like a half decent side, but tonight they were second best by quite some way. In the event, as a contest the game was a complete mismatch.
Rob Thomas could probably have made a good go of it as a prop forward, he was nigh on impossible to knock off the ball and was at the centre of most of Liversedge's forward runs... of which there were many.
It was Thomas who set up the opening goal, when he dispossessed Liam White on the edge of the area with a crunching tackle and rolled the ball into the path of Vaughan Redford, who calmly netted the only goal of a fairly one sided first half after 14 minutes.
I have jotted down the details of all the chances that the visitors had in the opening 45 minutes, it takes up two whole pages. Ryan Ellis' goal led a charmed life and it was something of a minor miracle that 'Sedge' were only one-nil up at the break, particularly when Ellis blocked Cody Cromack's 35 yard effort and Callum Barron missed an absolute sitter with an open goal at his mercy from the rebound.
HT: 0-1
The second half was as comprehensive a demolition job as I have seen in many a year, as the visitors mercilessly put Armthorpe to the sword.
Thomas once again was the creator of a second goal for Liversedge just three minutes after the restart when he battled his way into the Welfare penalty area before rolling a sideways pass to Redford who applied the finishing touch from ten yards.
The big number nine then went for glory himself, but drilled a shot wide of the upright.
The Armthorpe defence went AWOL and Ellis had to race from ten yards out of his goal area to tackle Redford.
Aaron Rogers played the ball into the left channel for Thomas who neatly turned the ball into the path of Callum Barron and he claimed the third goal of the night, while Thomas chalked up a hat-trick of assists.
Rogers then added a fourth with a crisp shot from fifteen yards after 65 minutes.

Ellis saved close range efforts from Vaughan and Rimmington... and then himself as he almost dropped the ball into his own goal.
But the determined Armthorpe keeper was beaten for a fifth time when Cody Cromack placed a 25 yard free kick into the bottom right hand corner of the net inside the final ten minutes.
Vaughan completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after he'd been fouled by Callum Sharp.
Fraser Oxley netted a consolation goal right at the end, when Armthorpe were awarded a penalty... it certainly didn't look as though they were going to score any other way tonight.
FT: Armthorpe Welfare 1 v Liversedge 6
